Abstract

The role of teachers' subject matter knowledge in teaching has received a great deal of attention lately. This paper reviews literature on teachers' subject matter knowledge, with respect to four questions:

Why are questions about subject matter knowledge being raised?

What kind of subject matter knowledge do teachers need?

Is there such a thing as subject-specific pedagogy, and if so, what is it?

What kind of policies are addressing teachers' subject matter knowledge?
